Chapter 5

Star wanted to lift the mood in their home. The ride home from the clinic had really given her a chance to clear her mind and she realized that she was definitely on edge. The only way to get things back on track was to have a much needed heart to heart with the man she planned to spend the rest of her life with. She made a simple dinner of spaghetti, garlic bread, and salad, all the while wondering if he was going to be home at the usual time. She found herself exhaling when she heard the front door close. She met him in the dining room as she placed the salad bowl on the table. Their eyes met, but each hesitated to say a word to the other.

“Smells good, bae,” Black opened up sitting his briefcase by the doorway then walking over to give her a peck on the cheek. “How was your day?”

“Hard,” she replied truthfully. “Yours?”

“Crazy busy. One mishap after another.”

“But I’m sure you’re handling it with pizzazz.” She gave him a supportive smile before nodding her head toward the kitchen. “Wanna go ahead and wash your hands?”

Black nodded and headed to the kitchen. Star followed behind him to retrieve the lemonade she’d poured for them. She admired his gait as he moved about. Her husband had always exuded raw confidence and sex appeal. Those things hadn’t changed; neither had her admiration for those traits of his. She wondered where they’d gone wrong over the last couple of months.

Black dried his hands on a nearby dish towel then grabbed the two plates of spaghetti from the counter without being asked.

“Thanks,” Star said softly.

He nodded again and returned to the kitchen with her following closely behind. They took their seats, blessed the food and began to enjoy their meals. Black reached for the salad bowl and placed a hearty helping onto his plate as his mind raced through several things he needed to remember to do the next morning upon getting to the office. He missed the way Star sat staring at him for a moment before fixing her own salad.

“I had a treatment appointment today,” she finally said, not taking her eyes off of him.

“Oh? How did that go?”

“Not so good.”

He looked at her questioningly. “How can it not go well? All you do is get a shot. That’s not brain surgery.”

“You know, these hormones are really starting to affect me…emotionally and physically. Dr. Heath referred me to a psychiatrist. He said he wants to make sure I’m of sound mind.”

“He thinks you’re crazy?” he asked with concern as he placed a twirl of spaghetti into his mouth.

“I don’t know if I’d say ‘crazy’ but he feels that I’m stressing out and wants to make sure that I have someone to discuss my feelings with during this process.”

“Sounds like a waste of money to me.”

Star looked down at her plate and shrugged. “I don’t know…maybe it’s a good idea. I do have a lot of things on my mind these days.
